I have returned to Kathmandu after more than a week long driving upto the far western end of Nepal, Mahendra Nagar border. I don’t wish to travel again, although I love to travel. The trip was enough to understand the poor infrastructure of Nepal. First and foremost, the road condition is unacceptably poor. It took four hours to travel first 100 kms. The ‘highway’ is full of potholes, (say craters) and traffic jam. The highway is suppose to be a backbone of development especially for a landlocked country, and this ‘highway’ sufficiently explains why the country remained poor and why there is no hope in the foreseeable future. The snail pace of construction creates reasonable ground to believe the news of corruption and mismanagement of government budget. I am not surprised but I am suprise too. The road from Narayanghat to Butwal has been in under construction for several years now and there is no sign of completion. The distance is about 120 kms and its takes five hours minimum. This ...
