On writing

I write, today I am writing about my writings. I write for a very simple reason. My writings are on my usual days, about my daily life and family chores. Most importantly, writing structures my thoughts. Stephen King, in his memoir 'On Writing', says that writing is not about making money, getting famous, or impressing people. It is about enriching the lives of those who read your work and enriching your own life in the process. He describes writing as a form of telepathy: a writer places thoughts on a page, and years later, another person can experience those same thoughts.  I like that idea. My writing serves an even simpler purpose. It helps me understand what I think. In future, I can go back to my writings and feel the feeling of the moment. Memory is unreliable. Experiences fade. The details of a conversation, a journey, or a lesson learned on a difficult day slowly disappear. Writing pushes back against that forgetting. It creates a small archive of a life. Sometimes I r...

12th day with limited internet access

I can't describe more how the internet has become a part of our daily life. I now know it well when I have no easy internet.  This reminds me of life in the 90s. It was different. These technologies were slowly appearing. The telephone was a symbol back then. We had a neighbor who had the telephone, and they were tired of receiving calls from everyone. The telephone set was locked in a wooden box, but as a kid, we learned to deal with the hang press - pressing the hang key number of times, would actually dual the number. And we would talk for hours over the phone. I probably have memorized more than 150 telephone numbers, of my friends, relatives, school, hospitals, and government ministries ( I have no clue why I memorized this, but it was fun). Being able to operate fax was a kind of technical expertise.. Now, the internet is so common that we can't imagine not having it. It is so given... Just imagine, no ATM, no credit card payment, no WhatsApp, no email, I'm not talkin...

Finding beauty in no internet connectivity

Typing the blog offline - and as soon as I'm online this blog will also go online. I am thinking about what should I do when I don't have internet. I have so much free time. I can read, I can write - not only blogs but real writing on paper. I can listen to music. I can ....the list goes on. Do I do all those things? I doubt but one thing is for sure that I am NOT doing is that I will not be spending time online. :) Now, I don't have pressure to be online and check feeds, but this takes away my capacity to be in touch with my loved ones anytime. Maybe it's human nature that we worry more when our ability to be in touch is taken away. Before, it felt like the internet is around forever, for all, everywhere. We have almost forgotten those days. We often do not miss to appreciate days without the internet. But really? Not having an access to the internet for a few hours, I have started to feel its importance - it's been just a few hours.  This is a real pai...
