I listen to an interesting podcast recently, 19 Uncomfortable Truths About Human Nature, the guest speaker was Gurwinder Bhogal. It introduces some entirely new ideas, and I wanted to reflect on it. It talks about some of the cognitive biases and limitations. We like to believe that we are rational, fair, and balanced. That we think independently. That we are kind because we are good people. But the truth is more complicated. We are not as objective as we think We often talk about empathy as if it is the ultimate virtue. But empathy has a shadow. We feel deeply for “our people”, our family, our group, our beliefs. And sometimes, that same empathy makes us blind, even hostile, to others. It is not that people are cruel for no reason.
